Easter Sunday

IMG_5249

I’m beginning to think that the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and all the others need to come during naptime, not at night! Neither of my kids are “morning people” (wonder where they get that??) and so having a surprise in the morning when they are cranky and moody isn’t the best timing. Needless to say, I didn’t get a picture of the two of them happily holding their Easter basket and goodies!

IMG_5245

Plus, Sunday mornings are just the worst time to throw in an added event! We are usually already rushing around trying to get everyone up, fed and dressed for church! But we did it!

IMG_5281

Stratton looked so handsome (and OLD!) in his shirt and tie!

IMG_5258

Arden didn’t want Stratton in the pictures. .

After church we had lunch with some of the Wilson’s at Grandpa’s house.

Stratton, Arden and Darcy (wearing matching dresses!) aren’t they cute!!

IMG_5333

Melt me.

IMG_5334

This picture almost convinces me we need to have another baby. . .Almost but not enough!

IMG_5310

Aunt Paula brought a bunch of eggs and hid them for the kids to find.

Arden keeps her eye on Darcy!

Then they built a tent

Crazy Kids!!

IMG_5321

We made our way back to Gigi and Pops house and Arden picked flowers on the way.

IMG_5323

And dropped most of them.

IMG_5328

And she was not in the mood to have her picture taken, but her little outfit was cute, so I had to throw this in!

Easter 2015- Friday and Saturday

Friday night we took the kids to Spring Sing. I like they both liked it pretty good. It was Arden’s first time. Stratton told us afterwards that there should be more spring stuff in it and not so much scary stuff? I’m not sure what he thought was scary??

IMG_5177

We stayed at Nan and Pa’s house Friday night. We had such a nice day on Saturday! We got up and around a little late, then we met the crew for lunch at the Greek House! We should have taken a picture of our table! There were 13 of us! Sam and Wade and their three kids, and Kristen and Brett and their 2 kids, and us! The restaurant was packed (as everything is in Searcy on Spring Sing weekend!) It took awhile and was a little chaotic but it was a fun lunch! After lunch we headed to Harding for a Easter Egg hunt on the Front Lawn! It was a perfect afternoon! The weather was sunny and just a tad cool- perfect for playing outside! The hunt was so much fun! There were plenty of people there, but it wasn’t overly crowded! I think we my have to make this a tradition!

The areas that they hunted were divided by age, so this is the only one I got of my two. . .

IMG_5210

Arden and McKinnon got to hunt together, kinda! McKinnon is a little more of a go-getter than Arden! She had a basket full before they even let them start! She shared some of them with Arden, so she could go get more!

IMG_5199

Arden only picked up PINK eggs!

IMG_5207

Ian and Stratton got to hunt together. It took them awhile to warm up to each other this time, but once they did they had lots of fun. Running around and beating trees with sticks. . .you know “boy stuff”.

IMG_5214

15 years and 7 kids later!

IMG_5219

It’s been almost 16 years since we first met! Our freshman year of college we became friends when we lived in Cathcart (2 Short Hall) together! Sam was my suitemate, and Kristen was just 2 doors down from my room. Seems like yesterday!

6 of out of 7 kids! Laney (Sam’s oldest), Kate (Kristen’s oldest), Ian (Kristen’s youngest), Stratton, McKinnon (Sam’s middle), and Arden, missing Shepherd (Sam’s youngest) he was in his stroller.

IMG_5254

IMG_5223

I forget how nice the campus is when the weather is nice. After the egg hunt, most of the other kids and families cleared out and we pretty much had the front lawn to ourselves! The kids ripped and roared, and chased each other and had so much fun! We got to visit a little while the kids played. Sam and Wade needed to leave to head back home and Kristen and her crew had tickets to the 2pm Spring Sing show. We took our kids to the student center to use the bathroom, get a snack and make a trip through the bookstore. We all got a new t-shirt and I got a LARGE coffee and we had planned to go back out to the front lawn and play and walk around campus some more since it was so nice, but Stratton decided to have a major meltdown in the student center because we wouldn’t let him have a coke and gummy candy. Really?! He just got a new shirt and we even bought him a Harding Football! Was he grateful about that? Nope. He screamed and cried all the way to the car (which of course was on the other side of campus) I was mortified. I know it was because he was tired, but still! He got his rear tore up when we got to the car. Then we went to Nan and Pa’s and got our stuff together and headed towards Hickory Ridge in hopes they would take a nap!- They were both asleep before we got out of town!

Trying to get Arden in her carseat Jarrod pulled a muscle or something in his back, so he was pretty miserable the rest of the day. He laid on the couch, and the kids played and we dyed Easter eggs then we had dinner. It was pretty late by the time we finally got them both asleep! Then it was time to wait on the Easter Bunny to come!

Slowing the rhythm of rush in our lives.

IMG_4647

These two drive me crazy, but I couldn’t be more blessed!

I feel like, as of late, I’m just speeding through what we’ve been doing!! I know that we are busy- but I can see from the lives of my friends and co-workers that as the kids get older things are going to get even more busy! So, I try not to rush and I really do try and make the most of the time we get to spend together!

I’m being more intentional with what time we have together. And my goal is to make better decisions about how we spend our time as a family. I’m not pushing Stratton to play every sport that comes up (like seems to be the way of most families where we live) and I’m not signing Arden up for activities to help her “grow and develop life skills”, like gymnastics and kinder-music etc. . .Not that there is anything wrong with having activities! But there is something wrong with kids being so busy they can’t be kids. I feel like the time we are given with them when they are young (right now) is the most important to helping shape and solidify our family relationships! I want my kids to be content on a random Friday night if we just stay in and do nothing but play and enjoy each other’s company. That’s enough. We don’t need to always have plans or be with a group. It’s hard sometimes for me, you know I really like to be around people and want to entertain or go out with friends or have something fun to do. So I’m learning as well! I just want our little family to have a closeness and I think that can only come from spending time together.

In that same thought process, I have come to realize that I also need less going on in my life. So I am working on being less busy as well. I am learning to say “No” to activities for both me and the kids. I read something recently about wearing busyness as a badge of importance. I am so guilty of that!! I sometimes think if we aren’t busy then we aren’t being engaged, useful or productive or living a full life! But being busy all the time leaves little time for what is really important!

I am trying, gradually I might add, to turn my way of thinking more to just being able to say “No” to some activities and projects, so that I can say “Yes” to my kids and husband. I started reading a book several months back about this and I didn’t even have to read very far in it when I had an Ah-Ha moment! So now, I’m trying to be more considerate about things I commit myself to. I think about what I will be gained and what will have to be sacrificed. Because every time I say “Yes” to something additional it’s a sacrifice, whether it be my time, energy, money, etc. . . .and how is that going to affect MY FAMILY. Not just me.

When I say “Yes” to endless small demands, it takes up precious time and puts more stress on me which makes me less attentive to my kids and husband, less patient and less loving. So really, I’m saying “No” to them. That’s just not how I want to live. I want to say “Yes” to the ones that matter most first! They deserve to get the very best me, not the left over tired, cranky, impatient me. Right?!

But saying “No” is so hard for me! I am a people pleaser. It’s just who I am. There is nothing in the world I hate worse than knowing I disappointed someone! I feel pressure from friends, people at church, school and work and sometimes even my family! And I don’t want to disappoint them! I was recently called a “slacker” by a friend when talking about my commitment to Stratton’s school and how we aren’t very involved in the PTA. She was joking, but it still made me wonder if that’s what others might think. Surprisingly, after I explained to her why I don’t feel compelled to give the school more of my time and money, she completely understood and even confided in me that she wished she could be more like that, but just couldn’t. Because of what EVERYONE ELSE would think of her and she felt that she has already said “Yes” so many times she now feels it’s expected of her!! Whew! That is a lot of pressure!  I get it! I feel the same way, and I don’t want to feel like that anymore!! I don’t want to be bullied into doing something because I feel pressure or guilt! But it’s hard because this is what I hear in my head: “I want to do what is expected of me, I don’t want to disappoint anyone”. . . “I don’t want others thinking I am not pulling my weight.” . . . “I don’t want my love or commitment for my child/church/school/job to be questioned!”. Here’s what I know, each person has a set of priorities, and you have to base your time and energy accordingly. There is never enough time, so when you keep saying “Yes” to things that come up something has to give. What you “give” is up to you. If you “give” up time with your husband to stay up late and make cupcakes for a baby shower at church (as I have done many times) it may be worth it to you (Hello, it’s for a CHURCH shower!) but what will it cost you. And what is the reason you made the commitment. Is it out of love and a desire to serve or is it out of obligation, pressure, or fear of disappointment?? I’m not saying never help! I’m saying that I need to be more aware of why I say “Yes” and how my commitments affect the ones who are most important to me! Say “Yes”  when the cause is worthy, needed and necessary, and not just because you don’t know how to say “No”.

I’m not yet sure how to deal with feeling guilty (I myself have MAJOR guilt issues) about saying no. I’m praying about it and I feel like God will help me with it. I am already able to feel confident that I am making the best decision I can for MY family and MY situation. When I have recently said “No”. I would like to believe that over time it becomes easier and easier because I can see the positive outcomes and I’m less stressed, proof that I made the right decision!

When I am not pulled in a thousand different directions, and I’m not as stressed, my attitude is better, I have more patience and I’m able to be the mom and wife my family deserves.

March blew by!

March is full of birthdays, big events and spring break! It just flies by! It’s officially spring! Easter is just around the corner and just 8 weeks till school is out for summer!

This big girl is 2 1/2!! How crazy is that??!

She is so good and happy most of the time but her tantrums are becoming a little more frequent in the past weeks!

IMG_4799

Arden took our picture!

IMG_4845

Guess who is using the potty!!

We are only using pull-ups at night! It’s about time for her Potty Party!

IMG_4915

Stratton and mommy had a date! He picked Subway. (REALLY. I said we could go anywhere he wanted and he picked Subway!) And then we went shopping at the mall and he got new clothes (it was torture getting him to try on jeans!) and a pair of flip flops and a watch! And then hit up the cookie place before we left, of course!

IMG_4920

St. Patty’s day Stratton made a trap so he could catch a Leprechaun! He almost got one!

IMG_4922

The noise maker must have scared Mr. Leprechaun and some gold coins fell out of his pocket!

IMG_4923

Proud of his gold coins!

IMG_4925

The Ag For Autism Bracket Bonanza went GREAT!! Stratton got to go and he really liked it and was really good. We raised $65,000 that night!!

DSC_3717

Friday I picked the kids up a little early and we had a little treat!

I think we have another frozen yogurt lover on our hands!

IMG_4931

He can’t get enough sprinkles.

IMG_4933

Arden liked the furry animals at Petco, but steered clear of the snakes and creepy crawly things!

IMG_4936

Parker had his 3rd birthday party!

IMG_5098

Arden took this lovely picture of Stratton. . .

IMG_5143

We’ve had a few days of AWESOME weather, we played outside and even had a picnic, which the kids thought was awesome! Who knew burgers wrapped in tin foil would be such a hit?

IMG_5104

We had a visitor. The kids begged to keep her, but she was too well fed to have been a stray. I told then she was just out exploring and sure enough after a little while she rounded the corner of the house next door and headed home I guess! Arden really loved her. She kept saying “This Kitty Cat is my favorite!”. . .maybe we do need a cat???

They finally got to build a snowman!!

Today we decided to try and get out and head to Gigi and Pops! The main roads were fine!

They didn’t get as much snow as us, but it was still A LOT! Plenty to play in!! Stratton had fun climbing on the big mounds of snow where Pops had cleared off their driveway. They even dug a big hole in one it was big enough Arden could get in it!

IMG_4749

IMG_4792

They  Pops worked really hard and made a great looking snowman!

What a fun afternoon!!

IMG_4798

So, Jarrod and I watched them build their snowman and then we left them to it! We headed back home and had a date night! We even went to a movie! The kids stayed at Gigi and Pops house and we went to pick them up Sunday afternoon. A little alone time was nice after the past week, and with busy weeks ahead! We accidently slept in on Sunday and didn’t wake up till almost noon! What?!! I suppose we needed some rest?!
